The key to winning the war for talent

BY Evelyn Jackson (CEO and Creative Director)

The last 18 months have been a rollercoaster of a ride for most people. The COVID pandemic has challenged not only how we work and where we work, but it has also challenged the work itself.

Already we are seeing research come out of the last 18 months that signal a shift on the traditional employment contract dynamics. PWC in their 2021 “What workers want: Winning the war for talent” the Future of Work report, share their findings of a recent such piece of research that suggests that the ‘power’ in the employment relationship has shifted from employer to employee.

I agree that it certainly feels like this may be the case right now, with many organisations across Australia struggling to fill positions and attract talent when they need it most. Here at Corporate Crayon, we have continuously shared our insights from working with many individuals in corporate and government sectors over the years, signalling that organisations that have a ‘balance of power’ have been the ones that are able to not only attract and retain top talent, but importantly, to fuel discretionary effort in the workplace.

And this balance can only be reached when you look to understand the key motivators of those you employ. An Employee Value Proposition (EVP) is now more important than ever. Understanding how you can attract individuals and what they are seeking as well as what you can offer in return for their time, expertise and effort is critical.

A well-constructed EVP should demonstrate this ‘balance’.

It needs to do 3 things:

  1. Communicate what I can expect from the organisation in both tangible and non-tangible returns/benefits

  2. Inspire me by the opportunity based on an authentic reality

  3. Give clarity on what is expected of me as an active participant in the employment relationship

These may seem obvious, and indeed crafting an EVP should not be complicated, but it does need to be aligned to what an organisation needs AND what the talent is seeking to attract, motivate and retain now require. Understanding these goals, behavioural expectations and drivers for motivation are the first step before you dive into contacting your internal or external marketing team.

Here at Corporate Crayon, we follow a human centric approach to all our work and our success is a testament to this!
