How will the people in your business change in 5 years?
BY Evelyn Jackson (CEO and Creative Director)
Every business works on a vision, a strategy, medium-and short-term goals. Most businesses do this systematically, part of their annual business reviews. These priorities are then communicated, cascaded down and employees are then usually assessed against them.
Knowing your business priorities is key, but knowing your employees is now critical. Differentiate yourself as an employer by how well you know your employees. How well you know their behaviours, traits, aptitudes, beliefs, and values. In five years, will your employees care about the same things they care about today? What are their key motivators? How can you engage with them in a way that personally connects with them?
Here are some ideas:
Be genuinely interested in the people you lead
Get to know how they want to be challenged
How important is sociability? And do they want this from their workplace or have the boundaries of work and life now become less blurred?
Understand what gives them meaning in the work they do and the life they lead
Involve individuals in decision making when it is possible
Share team goals–both commercial and behavioural
Explore thinking styles as differences here greatly impact how we communicate
There are many variables to attracting and retaining talent. Understanding your employees and the people you want to hire in the future and using that knowledge before you write your business strategy perhaps the biggest one.
Let us help you understand the best talent.
