Why invest in improving employee wellbeing?

Wellbeing is the new strategic imperative for organisations and leaders. With the recent increase in overall changes in employee expectations and priorities when it comes to their work and life, in combination with the rise of negative emotions, employee wellbeing in the workplace should be made a priority.

Neglecting employee wellbeing and mental health has serious, costly implications for organisations.

Mental health conditions also accounted for 9% of all serious workers’ compensation claims, a +36.9% increase from 2017-2018 to 2021-22.
— Safe Work Australia

Understanding, identifying and eliminating the psychosocial and psychological risks in the workplace is imperative now more than ever. Employers who prioritise improving employee wellbeing and health in the workplace also experience a range of measurable advantages, including:

  • Increased productivity

  • Increased profitability

  • Reduced turnover

  • Fewer safety incidents

Workplace wellbeing is a holistic approach to creating an environment where employees can thrive both personally and professionally. It’s crucial because it directly impacts productivity, engagement, and an organisation’s ability to adapt to rapid changes.

Psychosocial & psychological safety in the workplace

Psychosocial safety ensures the protection of employees’ mental, emotional, and social wellbeing by addressing workplace stressors like high demands, bullying, or unclear roles that could harm their psychological health.

By addressing psychosocial hazards, organisations promote mental health, job satisfaction, and productivity, thereby improving employee wellbeing. As of April 2023, Australian legislation now requires businesses to prioritise psychosocial safety alongside psychological safety in the workplace. The updated Model Work Health and Safety Regulations require organisations to manage psychosocial risks using a hierarchy of controls, a risk management approach to reduce or eliminate risks in the workplace.

This masterclass equips leaders with the knowledge to understand the difference between psychosocial and psychological safety, the new legislative obligations in Australia, and practical steps for minimising workplace risks and improving employee wellbeing.

Q 1: What’s the difference between psychosocial safety & psychological safety?

A:  While the terms ‘psychosocial safety’ and ‘psychological safety’ are often used interchangeably in relation to workplace wellbeing, they are distinct and address different aspects of the employee experience. Understanding the difference between them is crucial, as both significantly impact employees, though in different ways.

“It's important to distinguish between psychological safety and psychosocial safety. Psychological safety typically focuses on team-level dynamics, such as feeling safe to speak up or take interpersonal risks within a team. In contrast, psychosocial safety is broader, encompassing organisation-wide factors that affect mental health and wellbeing.” Dr Chanvi Singh, Organisational Psychology Research Fellow

Q 2: Why train your leaders on how to improve employee wellbeing in the workplace?

A: Training leaders in workplace wellbeing is essential for fostering engagement, boosting productivity, and creating a positive organisational culture. Well-trained leaders can proactively support employee mental and physical health, reducing burnout and high turnover.

Training plays a critical role in improving employee wellbeing and enhances decision-making, ensures compliance with health and safety standards, and additionally strengthens leadership skills, all of which contribute to a resilient and future-ready workforce.

Q 3: How do I know if I need to improve employee wellbeing in the workplace?

A: Improving employee wellbeing is something that should always be a priority, as it leads to long-term benefits for both employees and the organisation. However, specific indicators may signal the need for more focused efforts. These include increased absenteeism, high turnover rates, low engagement or morale, and frequent reports of stress or burnout. It is therefore important to measure employee wellbeing to get insights into how various factors in the workplace impact employees.

The Workplace Wellbeing Assessment, is easy for employees to complete and provides actionable insights to develop strategies to improve wellbeing. As experts in wellbeing and certified Barrett Values Centre consultants, our team can deliver an end-to-end wellbeing assessment solution from research and strategy to implementation.
